Northwest Choirs / Mark Carson
In this episode of the Bank First Ranger Hour, host Gary Darby is joined by Dr. Alex Belalovic, Director of Choral Activities at Northwest Mississippi Community College. Dr. Belalovic discusses the upcoming spring choral concert on April 10 at the Heindl Center for the Performing Arts, featuring performances by Northwest Singers, Ranger Consort, and Ranger Chorale. The concert program celebrates the reopening of the Notre-Dame Cathedral with a lineup of French and Latin choral works, including pieces by Fauré, Delibes, and Machaut. He also previews their May 2 concert in Oxford and an exciting milestone: the Ranger Chorale’s debut performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 1. This marks the first time a Northwest choir has been invited to perform at the historic venue.
In the second half of the program, Gary visits with Head Baseball Coach Mark Carson, who recently became the all-time winningest coach in Northwest history. Coach Carson reflects on his journey from player to head coach, the mentorship of former coaches Jim Miles and Donnie Castle, and the role of longtime assistant coaches like Bill Selby and Dominic Carlini. With a current record of 23–12 (6–8 in conference), Carson shares insights on the Rangers’ season so far, the impact of close games, team chemistry, and their push for postseason play. He also credits the program's professional-level experience as a major asset in player development and recruiting.
The episode concludes with a look at the upcoming baseball and softball matchups against Southwest and Coahoma Community Colleges, as both teams continue their Region 23 schedules. Listeners are encouraged to visit NWCCRangers.com for schedules, stats, and more updates on Northwest athletics.
